I recently discovered the patterns of Merchant & Mills. Although I am used to sewing close and semi fitted patterns, I do like wearing loose tunics. I was impressed by Merchant & Mills’ different style and some of their patterns reminded me of the tunics that I wear and include a lot of ease.

It took me a while to decide which pattern I should go for first. While fabric shopping in Istanbul a few months ago, I had found this beautiful soft purplish linen and I was looking for a pattern that would be suitable. When I saw the Dress Shirt, I thought that the fabric would work well with this pattern.

Since I had never tried one of Merchant & Mills’ patterns, I decided to make a muslin for the dress. In their size chart, I came out as “12” but when I looked at the measurements of the finished garment, 12 seemed way too loose for my style. So I tried the “8” and the muslin came out as a good fit. I tried the short and rolled up sleeves on the muslin and I think that I will go for the rolled up one.

For the fabric, I will use linen and I decided to make the bib lining from thin white cotton. I did only one alteration to the pattern. The dress came out too long, I guess that it is intended for taller sewists. I shortened the pattern by 10cm to fit my size. Let’s see how it will turn out 🙂
